SLPA Certificate Program

Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) work directly with students with communication challenges in public school settings under the supervision of a fully qualified and nationally certified speech language pathologist. SLPAs have a significant role in enhancing the quality of speech language services for children and adolescents that need support and services for speech, communication, reading, and writing. This certificate program provides the opportunity to meet the requirements for authorization in the state of Colorado, and to develop the knowledge and skills to work under the supervision of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. This certificate is appropriate for individuals with a BA in SLHS, completing a BA in SLHS (last semester senior year) or who have a BA in another field and have completed or are completing equivalent leveling coursework (24 hours) in an approved Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS).  

Application Procedures: Application for the On-Line SLPA certificate program will include an application (application instructions and application form), letter of intent, 1 official transcript from each school attended, and two letters of recommendation (recommendation form) one of which must be written by a former faculty member/instructor. Please send all materials to the SLPA Certification Program, Department of SLHS, UCB 409, Boulder, CO  80309. Attn: Graduate Program Assistant. 

Requirements for admission include:

  • GPA of 2.7 or above
  • Education – completion of one option below:
    • Last semester senior standing in SLHS (Audiological Rehabilitation and Speech Disorders may be taken concurrent with program)
    • BA in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences
    • BA in a field other than Speech Language Hearing Sciences with completion of at least 18 out of the 24 credits of “leveling” coursework in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences. 

The courses below are offered by the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Colorado.  Equivalent courses will also meet this requirement, if approved by the program director.  These requirements are also consistent with the Colorado Department of Education SLPA Authorization.  

Pre-Requisite Courses/ Course Equivalents:

LING 3100                 Sound Structure of Language (3)
SLHS 3106                 Hearing Science (3 credits)
SLHS 3116                 Speech Science (3 credits)
SLHS 4502                 Language Disorders: Child and Adult (3 credits)
SLHS 4512*               Speech Disorders: Voice, Cleft, Motor, Stuttering (3 credits)
SLHS 4560                 Language Development (3 credits)
SLHS 4704                 Audiological Evaluation (3 credits)
SLHS 4714*               Audiological Rehabilitation (3 credits)

*Can be taken concurrently with SLPA Certificate courses. 

Required Courses for the On-Line SLPA Certificate:

SLHS 4918/5018:  Introduction to Clinical Practice (2 credits if not previously completed, including 25 hours of observation.) Offered Fall and Spring Semesters (tuition cost as of fall '09 = $560)

SLHS 5032:  Competencies & Strategies for the SLPA (3 credits) Fall/Spring Semester
Includes Roles and Responsibilities of the SLPA, Working in the Public Schools, Service Delivery Models, Health and Safety, Screening, Assistive Technology, Introduction to Intervention, Documentation, Self Reflection and Evaluation (tuition cost as of fall '09 = $1,047)

SLHS 5930:  SLPA Internship (4) Fall/Spring Semester:
Placement for 12-15 hours per week for a total of 180 hours including a minimum of 100 hours of direct contact (face to face interaction with students) in a public school setting under the supervision of an MA-CCC SLP. (tuition cost as of fall '09 = $1,396)

An official acceptance letter from the program is required prior to registering for courses through Continuing Education.

Deadline for fall 2009 admission is July 31, 2009
Deadline for spring 2010 admission is October 21, 2009
