Introduction

Study in the sciences of human communication and disorders is a vibrant and exciting field.  Our graduates work with children and adults in clinical services.  They engage in research related to speech, language and hearing – in developing and aging individuals.  Others continue study in psychology, communication technology, and many other domains related to speech, language, and hearing.

Our undergraduate programs provide a firm foundation for future graduate study in the sciences of human communication, audiology, speech-language pathology, and in many other fields. Students have the opportunity to participate in clinical observation and service learning during the latter stages of their program.

The undergraduate major in Speech Language and Hearing Science is directed toward two types of students.  For students planning careers as speech-language pathologists and audiologists, we offer pre-professional training.  For students interested in the sciences of human communication, we offer broad coursework in speech, language, and hearing sciences.

The department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is within the College of Arts & Sciences. Undergraduate majors in SLHS obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, which includes a strong foundation of courses in the liberal arts. Courses at the undergraduate level are designed to introduce students to basic processes of communication, speech, language, and hearing, and to disorders of communication.

Undergraduate students may also complete the Speech Pathology Assistant Program, which will allow them to work as an assistant to a speech pathologist in the public schools.

Some career opportunities in this field require national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  In speech pathology and audiology, graduate study is required to become a certified clinician.

Interested in exploring speech, language, and hearing sciences?  Consider taking Introduction to Communication Disorders (SLHS 2000) or Human Communication Sciences (SLHS 2010).  If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you can take undergraduate courses though the CU Access Program.
