Dr. Langer has enjoyed a career that has interwoven work as a clinical Speech-Language Pathologist with work as a researcher and instructor. She completed her clinical training at the University of Iowa, and her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As an SLP, she has worked with Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and typically hearing students in clinical and school settings (both at brick-and-mortar schools and via telepractice). She has supervised graduate clinicians in the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Northwestern University and has worked in school districts as a consultant, diagnostician, parent educator, and supervisor for SLP-Assistants. Prior to teaching at CU-Boulder, she taught in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences department at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her research has mainly focused on linguistic input provided to Deaf and hard-of-hearing children from parents, teachers, and educational sign language interpreters. Her dissertation looked quantitatively and qualitatively at accessibility of important parameters of classroom discourse for students learning through educational interpreters. She currently works as a Research Instructor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus on the Speech Perception Over Time (SPOT) project, a longitudinal study examining how infants’ early discrimination abilities shortly after hearing aid fittings are related to later language development.
